Understand the Power of Persuasion

November 15th, 2009 · No Comments · Goal Setting, Time Management

A German study demonsrated how blode women performed IQ tests more slowly after they’d read jokes that reinforced the message that blondes are less bright. The study used around 80 women with various hair colors and appeared to show how the suggestion that blondes were less bright adversely affected their confidence.

Whether we like it or not we are all highly suggestible creatures. We are all capable of thinking and reasoning but doing so uses up valuable energy. So we will always take a short cut to save us thinking if possible. Human psychology underpins an understanding of persuasion techniques.

Good sales people know all about the power of persuasion. When shopping for clothes you’re likely to encounter the sales person who will tell you how great you look in something, even if you don’t. It’s often only on reflection that you realise that you had been persuaded to buy something by a particularly friendly sales person.

The persuasion techniques that are commonly employed include using someone’s name. We’ve probably all run into an overly friendly sales person who uses your name in a friendly and familiar way.

A well known technique is to adopt the same vocabulary and style of speech as the person you are trying to influence. Imitating someones style of speech, the language they use and their accent is a technique that is commonly used.

And another common persuasion technique is to use very positive, upbeat, motivating words. The human subconscious is particularly susceptible to these subtle messages.

Learning to recognize and use persuasion techniques can be useful, not only to sales people, but to every body. Parents can use these techniques to influence their children. Techniques like these can be effectively used in the workplace.

Bushcraft courses are a great way to learn about nature and bushcraft skills. Remember to take along a warm sleeping bag and some good quality outdoor clothing.
